About the quest section |
The first thought, that came to my mind, while I’ve chosen to write a new Quest-related article, was ‘where would I start
from’… from scratch by searching the MPQ-Archive for the sound files? It was in that exact moment, that the memory supplied
me with the right piece of information “You’ve already read an extensive text concerning them by a person under the nickname
of LemmingofGlory, so go search the TheDark-Forums for the link”…looking at it again, it was clear, that if there’s any writ,
that I can base my work on, then it’s clearly this one. You’ve the distinction between Quests\Tasks, the
Quest-Template(Trigger\Gist\Reward)
giving you the idea of the Quest and the transcripts of the related sound files with some useful notes. So, rather than
creating an alternative I meant to expand this wonderful contribution by adding details from the other Diablo-Versions
(+Hellfire) and mentioning possible interpretations, which do either appear under Additional Information in the Template
or Notes in between Npc-speeches or after them.
Decide for yourself, if I’ve managed to do both LemmingofGlory and the Quest-Topic justice, but remember it really was the
intention :)

Other notes |
This is a short introduction about the quest section. Here we will give you basic information and some technical data about
the quests.
- Quest Types
First of all, there are two kinds of quests. Quests, which were discovered while examining unused (in most cases*)
sound files or movies and the ones that do only exist as texts within the code of the Diablo-Versions.
* actually some were used (PrDemo\Beta), but do not appear in the Retail-Version anymore. Furthermore a distinction
was made between those that weren't integrated and several others, which are earlier, sometimes totally different
versions of present quests.
- Timeline
Some of the NPC's speeches contain information regarding when a certain quest should have taken place in other cases
logical conclusions helped to find the answer, that's why a partially reconstructed timeline is presented here:
Part I:
-The Butcher
Well, it wouldn't make sense if you weren't receiving the information regarding the properties of the chamber
directly after being there and facing the decoration made of corpses.
-The Butcher's Chamber
Part II:
-Map of the Stars (read Wirt's quest-related speech)
Note:
You'll find the map quite early in the game, but the aligning of the stars will definitely not take place
immediately, which means that there will be enough time to finish the following quests and hopefully even the last
one until the stars align
-Lost Treasure (read Pepin's speech to find out why)
-Infestation of the Worms (again Wirt's speech is the key)
-Black Mushroom
General Info: The quests within the quest-related section of the Beta-code are usually organised like that:
-Introductional speech of the quest-giver
- Greeting of the Enemy (if there is one)
- Second & Final speech of the quest-giver
Sometimes alterations like for example the quest-giver's speech + another Npc's speech, which continues the quest,
do occur, but there's no sharing of quest-related info by non-involved Npc's like in the Retail.
Concerning Hellfire
Not just Blizzard left in some material regarding deleted quests within the code or the mpq-files! But while Blizzard
left traces of old quests, enemies, NPCs and levels everywhere, Synergistic picked up most of them and finished them.
But there are still some interesting things to discover. Find out everything about the Dark Mage and the wandering Trader
in the Hellfire part of the Quest section!
