The Archbishop Lazarus

Your assignment is to stop the former holy man from victimising the King's son (or the child, that you believe to be Albrecht). Besides that it needs to be mentioned, that you're again confronted with that topic by Tremain and that the betrayer's location is still the 16th Level.

image Tremain:
I seek a champion to undertake a serious duty, and the people of this town speak well of your courage and skill. The Arch-Bishop Lazarus, once King Leoric's most trusted advisor and a member of our order, has taken the path of evil. Not long ago Lazarus led a party of simple townsfolk into the labyrinth to find the King's missing son, Albrecht. Only a few of them escaped with their lives. Curse me for a fool! I should have suspected his veiled treachery then, for I have learned that it was Lazarus himself who kidnapped King Leoric's son and has since hidden him within the labyrinth. I still don't understand why the Arch-Bishop has turned to the darkness or what his interest is in Albrecht. Unless he means to sacrifice him at the full moon. That must be what he has planned! The survivors of his rescue party say that Lazarus was last seen running into the deepest bowels of the labyrinth, some sixteen levels beneath the cathedral. You must hurry and save the prince from the sacrificial blade of this demented fiend!

Why do you delay? Time is of the essence! The prince and the people of this kingdom are counting on you.

So, Lazarus has paid the price for his betrayal and justice is served. For your services this day, I bestow this mace unto you. Its name is Lightforge, and it is the holiest of our order's artifacts. As I am the last of this order, I entrust it to you. May the light guide you.

This is terrible! Lazarus will surely burn in hell for his horrific deed! Although the boy that you describe may not be our prince, I believe that Albrecht may yet be in danger. What ever vile power lay beneath the ground has assuredly gained a foothold in our world. All I can do now is pray for us all.
image Lazarus:
[Speech 1 = laz01.wav]
a)Abandon your foolish quest. All that awaits you is the wrath of my Master!
b)You are too late to save the child. Now you will join him in Hell!

[Speech 2 = laz02.wav]
b)You are too late to save the child. Now you will join him in Hell!
There are possible outcomes:
  • Tremains 3rd speech is used, as you have put paid to Lazarus' plan (the boy is alive), and the "Abandon your foolish quest. All that awaits you is the wrath of my Master!" - part of Lazarus' first speech. Why just a part of it you may ask? Well, remember that those speeches are taken from the final product in which not one time-driven quest appears, so what I think, that Blizzard has done is, they simply extended part a by part b for the final release's first speech, to imply that you can't get there in time at all (which is intended as Cain doesn't offer 2 final speeches like Tremain), since if they hadn't, part a would mean the opposite: Lazarus conjures you to not continue your quest, since if you did, the life of the child would be spared and Diablo is going to get quite mad at you [how horrible ;)],which is exactly the statement, that works for the positive outcome, in which Albrecht seems to be saved and therefore Lightforge is given to you.

  • Tremain shares the 4th speech, in which, although the sacrifice has happened, he hasn't lost the hope, that the prince is still allive, yet not save, but as you've failed, there will be no Lightforge-receiving and Lazarus gets really excited about the fact, that you didn't get there in time (imagine his self-satisfied facial expression, while he starts with 'You are toooooo late'). The only comfort, that you can derive from that experience, is that even if you lost the race against time, Lazarus will not win his against death either.
